Summary of Last Time

3. Why do we seek God?
4. Can we know the existence of God by our reason?
5. Why do people deny that God exists, if they can know Him by reason?
Read the actual answers here…discussion is great but good to know what the actual answers are:

3. We discussed our need for love. The fact that we are imperfect and our search for what is perfect and the Eucharist is about uniting ourselves to God.

Father Michael posed the additional question- How do we seek God…
We discussed the methods for seeking God- prayer, spiritual music, asking for His help

4.We discussed faith and reason and that they are not opposed to each other– quoting JP II “Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth; and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth—in a word, to know himself—so that, by knowing and loving God, men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves (cf. Ex 33:18; Ps 27:8-9; 63:2-3; Jn 14:8; 1 Jn 3:2).”
But reason only gets us so far by itself. Fr Michael quotes Kierkegaard saying there is a moment when logic is exhausted and need to take a leap of faith.
We discussed how to know God through reason:

eg everthing cannot have an origin in itself

5.
–Some people deny God as otherwise they would have to change their lives
– a faulty understanding of who God is. Father Michael suggested the book “Your God is too small” which gave 66 false images of God.

Clarified the differnce between having a childlike faith– eg characterised by simplicity and a childish faith– thinking God is an old man with a beard sitting on cloud
A childish faith is weak and more easily knocked.
Catholic Voices stress the importance of meeting people where they are at.

Anyone else wanting to add anything I missed… please do!
